Preventive Dentistry and Your Health
With our hectic schedules, it is easy to postpone dental checkups and cleanings. But foregoing regular visits to our practice can put your oral health and your wellbeing at risk. Certain oral conditions, if left untreated, can wreck the health of teeth and gums and they will require costly and/or invasive treatments in the future.
With regular checkups, conditions such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer can be revealed early on—thus allowing for more conservative treatment options that can save money and prevent the progression of disease. To help illustrate the importance of early detection, one should understand how a common condition like decay affects a tooth. Teeth cannot regenerate new tissue like other parts of the body, so once decay forms, it will progress into a deeper or wider cavity until the tooth is treated with a restoration. By revealing and treating decay early, patients will require a smaller restoration such as a filling instead of a more extensive restoration such as a crown.
In addition to committing to frequent examinations with our team, patients should also receive two professional cleanings a year. Professional cleanings are the only way to remove tartar—calcified plaque—a substance that builds up along the gums and is a leading contributor to gum disease.
